سردية إربد ذاكرة المكان والإنسان

إن كتابة تاريخ مدينة إربد واجب وطني على مثقفينا القيام به كي تتعرف الأجيال القادمة على تاريخ المدينة عبر العصور، والاطلاع على تطورها من جميع النواحي الاجتماعية والثقافية والاقتصادية والسياسية، هذه المدينة التي تزخر بعبق التاريخ وتزهو بعطاء الحاضر؛ فقد تعاقبت عليها حضارات مختلفة تركت فيها بصمات واضحة، فنهضت وتطورت حتى غدت من أبرز المدن الأردنية .

وتشير الدلائل التاريخية والأثرية إلى أن مدينة إربد كانت قائمة منذ خمسة آلاف سنة قبل الميلاد، وقد حُرف اسمها إلى (أربيلا) علمًا بأن اسمها القديم سامي الأصل مشتق من جذر (ربد) ربودًا أي أقام وحبس، وجاء في معاجم اللغة العربية أن الربد يعني اللون الأسود المختلط باللون الأحمر، وهذا المعنى قريب إلى مدلول اسم مدينة إربد، وينطبق على طبيعة تربتها الحمراء التي تفترش سهولها الواسعة.

الموقع

تقع محافظة إربد في الجهة الشمالية الغربية من المملكة الأردنية الهاشمية، فتحدها من الشمال الجمهورية العربية السورية، وتحدها فلسطين من جهة الغرب؛ إذ يتبع لمحافظة إربد لواء الأغوار الشمالية، وتحدها من الجنوب محافظة جرش، ومن الجنوب الغربي محافظة عجلون. أما من الشرق فتحدها محافظة المفرق. وتبلغ مساحة المحافظة حوالي 1572 كيلومترًا مربعًا.

Introduction

The city of Irbid is one the unique places in the Kingdom of Jordan which history has endowed with numerous gifts, thus writing its history, in addition to being a national duty, is essential to be undertaken by our intellectuals, simply for the future generations become familiar with this amazing city with its rich history that spans across the ages, as well as examine its development from different perspectives, such as social, cultural, economic, and political walks of life. Irbid is exceptional in that it rose and developed until it became one of the most prominent Jordanian cities, as it is etched into history as a city both rich in history and proud of its present achievements, due to the fact that, in it, various civilizations have succeeded one another leaving clear imprints.

Supported by Historical and archaeological evidence, the city of Irbid has existed since five thousand years before Christ, when its name was altered to (Arbela), despite the fact that its ancient name is of Semitic origin and derived from the root (r-b-d), rabada, meaning to reside or remain confined, furthermore, Arabic language dictionaries state that al-rabad refers to the mixing of two colors namely  black with red, thus, reaching close to the significance of the present name of the city of Irbid which corresponds to the nature of its red soil that spreads across its wide plains.

Location

The Irbid Governorate, with an area of approximately 1,572 square kilometers, is located in the northwestern part of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, where it is bordered to the north by the Syrian Arab Republic, to the west by Palestine, and the Northern Jordan Valley District administratively follows Irbid Governorate, to the south by Jerash Governorate, to the southwest by Ajloun Governorate, and to the east, it is bordered by Mafraq Governorate.
