Irbid in the Abbasid Period (132–656 AH / 750–1258 CE)

During the Abbasid period Irbid’s status declined compared to its position during both the early Islamic period and the Umayyad state, mainly due to the transfer of the Islamic state’s capital to Baghdad, which was relatively distant from Irbid, instead of the nearby Damascus, furthermore, political factors also played a major and significant role in shaping the Abbasid state policy toward Irbid, where the inhabitants of northern Jordan, in particular, were known for their loyalty and sympathy toward the Umayyad state, which led the Abbasid caliphs to reduce their interest in the city of Irbid (Al-Ghawanmeh, p. 48).

The city of Irbid, on the other hand, during the second Abbasid era specifically in the third Hijri / ninth century CE, came under the rule of several semi-independent dynasties that were autonomous from the Abbasid Caliphate, which included the Tulunid state (254–292 AH / 868–905 CE), founded by Ahmad ibn Tulun, and during this period, Irbid remained affiliated with the military districts (jund) of Jordan and Palestine until 321 AH / 933 CE, when it went under the rule of the Ikhshidids (323–358 AH / 934–968 CE), led by Muhammad ibn Tughj al-Ikhshid, followed by Fatimid control under the leadership of the commander Jawhar al-Siqilli in 358 AH / 968 CE, as well as coming under the Seljuk influence (Abu Ghanimeh, p. 33), furthermore the city of Irbid witnessed significant events during the period of the Crusader campaigns in the region.

The Battle of al-Uqhuwana

Considered as one of the most important battles in Islamic history taking place in the region, the Battle of al-Uqhuwana, which took place in 420 AH / 1029 CE and was mentioned by Ibn al-ʿAdim in Zubdat al-Halab.
