He worked as a secondary school teacher in the Eskişehir region, from which he resigned in March 1919.
Upon his return to Jordan, he worked in the field of education as a teacher in Karak, then as an administrative governor in Wadi al-Seer, Zarqa, and Al-Shobak, then he became a public prosecutor, and subsequently Chief of Protocol at the Amiri Diwan during the reign of King Abdullah I.
Critics bestowed upon Mustafa Wahbi al-Tall (ʿArar) the title “Poet of Jordan”, due to his poetic leadership that established a strong, dignified traditional poetic form, and for the themes of his poetry that expressed alignment with ordinary people and farmers. His poetry is characterized by simplicity, the use of commonly spoken daily vocabulary, borrowing from the lexicon of colloquial dialects, and the incorporation of folk proverbs.
The poet Mustafa Wahbi al-Tall was proficient in Turkish, French, and Persian, and was the first to warn in his poetry of the danger of the Zionist octopus that would extend across the map of the Arab homeland, demonstrating his foresight. He believed that the wellspring of Arab culture, expressed through writing in Arab newspapers and periodicals at the time, represented a fortress for the defense of Arab civilization.
The father of the late former Prime Minister Wasfi al-Tall, Mustafa Wahbi al-Tall “ʿArar” was immensly engaged with Arab countries through the relationships he forged with Arab writers in Egypt, Palestine, Damascus, Baghdad, and Beirut, as well as through his openness to world literature and his translations of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, he also took an active interest in literary, linguistic, and intellectual issues through dialogue in newspapers and magazines with a number of Arab writers of the period, including Ibrahim Naji, Ahmad al-Safi al-Najafi, Ibrahim Tuqan, Abd al-Karim al-Karmi (Abu Salma), and Sheikh Fouad al-Khatib, while maintaining a close relationship with the Royal Court of the late King Abdullah I ibn al-Hussein, where an elite group of poets and writers gathered and engaged in poetic debates and literary rivalries.
Arar’s literary production oscillated between poetry, history, linguistic studies, intellectual issues, and translation, where his works include ʿAshiyyat Wadi al-Yabis, Bil-Rifah wal-Banin, Al-Aʾimma min Quraysh, Articles on Language and Literature, and ʿArar’s Political Papers.
Although he was not able to compile his poetry into a single volume during his lifetime, many researchers, academic scholars, graduate students, and critics recognized the artistic value of his poetry, its themes, his turbulent life, and worked arduously to collect Arar’s poems and writings were collected postmortem, in addition to numerous studies and university theses were written about him.
Mustafa Wahbi al-Tall “ʿArar” passed away on 25 May 1949, and was buried in Irbid in accordance with his will and his house was later converted into a cultural forum and museum.
The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) adopted the Jordanian poet Mustafa Wahbi al-Tall “ʿArar” as the Arab Cultural Icon for the year 2022 based on the the decision of the Conference of Ministers Responsible for Cultural Affairs in the Arab World at its twenty-second session. This win was based on the recommendation of the Permanent Committee for Arab Culture regarding the selection of Arab cultural icons, in accordance with the agreed-upon criteria, and with the support of the representatives of Arab states on the committee for the nomination of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, granting him the designation “Arab Cultural Icon 2022”. This recognition reflects the poet’s significance in the collective memory of Jordanians and Arabs, and affirms the presence of the Jordanian intellectual within the broader Arab cultural movement.
Irbid is Jordan’s First City of Culture (2007)
Irbid was selected as the City of Jordanian Culture for the year 2007, becoming the first city to be designated under the Jordanian Cities of Culture Project launched by the Ministry of Culture in the same year. The project aims to select one Jordanian city annually in an effort to decentralize cultural activity, ensure equitable cultural development across the governorates, and concentrate cultural programs and initiatives in the selected city over the course of a full year, an initiative considered the first of its kind in the Arab region, seeking to counterbalance the long-standing concentration of cultural activity in the capital, Amman, and to promote cultural justice across the Kingdom.
Irbid’s selection as the City of Culture for 2007 was due to its profound civilizational significance throughout history, first the city is surrounded by numerous archaeological sites, including Umm Qais, Beit Ras, Idoun, and Pella (Tabqat Fahl), second it is bordered to the north, east, and south by fertile agricultural plains historically known as “Al-Aqḥuwānah,” named after the chamomile flowers that once covered the area, third Irbid hosts major educational institutions such as Yarmouk University, Jordan University of Science and Technology, Irbid National University, and Jadara University, in addition to numerous colleges, cultural centers, heritage museums, public gardens, and sports clubs, and fourth the city of Irbid is home of a distinguished group of intellectuals and cultural figures, including Arar and Adeeb Abbasi, among many others who have left a lasting imprint on the Arab cultural movement.
Irbid: Capital of Arab Culture (2022)
In 2022, Irbid successfully presented itself, both nationally and across the Arab world, as the optimal Capital of Arab Culture through showcasing its rich historical, cultural, and civilizational heritage and marking this unprecedented achievement by a year-long celebration whose events illuminated all nine districts of the Irbid governorate, highlighting their archaeological, touristic, historical, and cultural treasures. The success of this year-long celebration was not limited to the hard work done on a national public and private sector level, yet it transcended it to include Arab ministers, ambassadors, and Arab officials who attended various events commended the initiative for its organization, content, and strong public engagement, affirming its comprehensive success and positioning it as a model for future Arab Capitals of Culture, where these collaborative efforts led into a massive attendance of half a million citizens and visitors attending the cultural events, which included literature, heritage, traditional crafts, traditional professions, visual arts, music, and performing arts delivered through 473 local events and 45 Arab events over the course of the year.
Irbid Cultural Center
Inaugurated in 2017 under the patronage of Prime Minister Dr. Hani Al-Mulki, the Irbid Cultural Center, presently, serves as the headquarters of the Directorate of Culture and as a central hub for major cultural events in the governorate, attracting visitors from other Jordanian regions as well as from Arab and international communities.
The Irbid Cultural Center provides an inclusive cultural environment that fosters creativity, activates cultural engagement, and strengthens the cultural infrastructure required to support this vital sector, in addition to functioning as both a meeting point and a key station for cultural practitioners within Jordan’s broader cultural landscape. In its attempt to further reinforce Irbid’s role as a center for cultural production and artistic development, the Irbid Cultural Center, in 2022, launched a new free of charge specialized training under the name Center for Arts Training on its upper floor, and focused on various artistic disciplines throughout the year.
