The City of Irbid (Arabella)
As a member of the Decapolis cities, the city of Irbid (Arabella) enjoyed the membership advantages, especially in emulating Roman architecture and the offered facilities, hence It was distinguished by its control over the fertile plains of Irbid and Hauran, which were a major source of grain, especially wheat, earning them the titles “the granaries of Rome” and “the breadbasket of Rome.”
It is certain that the Romans paid special attention to Irbid, as it included caves and a Roman water pool, and it was visited by the Roman emperor Marcus Antonius Augustus, when a massive structure, similar to the triumphal arches erected at Roman city entrances, was constructed. Although this structure no longer exists, its construction is evidenced by a stone inscription dated to 238/239 AD, found beneath Tell Irbid, bearing prominent Roman names (Al-Suwayrki 2006:63–64).
